Canadiana at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library

Library and Archives Canada
The gateway to the collections and services of the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada. They include: films, documentaries, silent films and "talkies; architectural drawings, plans and maps; information in electronic formats; printed books; photographic images; textual records and publications for federal, provincial, territorial and foreign governments; video and sound recordings; works of art, including watercolours, sketches, miniatures, oil paintings and caricatures; sheet music, documentation related to music in Canada and recordings on disks and records of all formats, piano rolls, reels and spools, and eight-track tapes; the Canadian Postal Archives; medals, seals, posters and coats of arms; textual archives for various individuals and groups who have contributed to Canada's cultural, social, economic and political development; national, provincial and territorial newspapers from across Canada, from dailies to student newspapers, and from Aboriginal magazines to ethnic community newsletters; periodicals, microfilms, manuscripts and theses; and portraits of over one million Canadians since 1710.

Archival records of Alberta
Includes a link to: Archives Network of Alberta, a database of over 8000 records; Alberta InSight database of images in Alberta's archives; and the Alberta InWord database of textual records (letters, diaries etc).

Archives of Manitoba
Information about the Archives of Manitoba, which includes the archives of the Hudson's Bay Company.

Hudson's Bay Company Archives
Information on the holdings of records relating to the Company, and of relevance to those interested in the human and natural history of North and West Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador provinicial archives (PANL)
Archive contains the records of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador which are deemed to have enduring legal, fiscal, evidential or research value. PANL also collects records from private sources which have enduring value to the history of the province.

Northwest Territories Archives
Archives relevant to the human history of the NWT, created by individuals and organizations in the private sector, are also preserved and made accessible. The holdings document the history of the NWT including among other things the oral tradition and history of the NWT first nations, constitutional development in the NWT leading up to the creation of Nunavut, the activities of the Government of the Northwest Territories since 1967, the fur trade, aviation industry and the developemnt of the mining industry.

Archives of Ontario website: Government of Ontario website promoting the State's Archives
Includes access details, strategic plan, overview of collections, and an Archives Advisor Service. The archives include Ontario Government records (including land records and registrations of births, marriages and deaths), private sector records (including business/company records), genealogical records, vital statistics, records relating to aboriginal peoples, a library, and special collections of photographs, cartographic records, architectural records, documentary art, and sound and moving images.

Canadian North West Archival Network
Combined database for Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon. Links also to individual datasets for each province.

British Columbia Archives
Holdings include: government documents and records; private historical manuscripts and papers; maps, charts and architectural plans; photographs; paintings, drawings and prints; audio and video tapes; film; newspapers; and an extensive library of publications with a strong emphasis on the social and political history of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.

Includes a link to the Vital Event Indexes (births, marriages and deaths).
Many British emigrants went to BC and this searchable database is very useful.

Nova Scotia Archives & Records Management
A website including general information on Nova Scotian archival holdings that also allows searching of libraries and archives in Nova Scotia. It also contains online databases (including a database of Land Petitions; BosaNova, a descriptive records database of archival holdings in Nova Scotia; two centuries of divorce hearings; medical examiner records; Nova Scotia filmography and many more), genealogical research information, virtual exhibits etc. Free; no registration required.

Prince Edward Island Public Archives and Record Office
The records of the government of this province and private-sector papers and records deemed to be of lasting historical value. As well as textual materials such as correspondence files, journals, and newspapers, the holdings are rich in materials in other formats and media such as photographs, maps, architectural drawings, film, and sound recordings.

Saskatchewan Archives Board
The official records of the Government of Saskatchewan and acquisitions of documentary material from local government and those private sources "having a bearing on the history of Saskatchewan."

Yukon Archival Union List
The Yukon Archival Union List (YAUL) consists of descriptions of archival material held at publicly-accessible archival repositories in the Yukon Territory. The YAUL has been created by the Yukon Council of Archives with the assistance of the Archives Association of British Columbia. Use the following link to search the database:
