Founded in 1979, le Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le Canada francophone is the oldest of the BACS Specialist groups. The main objective of Le GRECF is to bring together academics and graduate students engaged in the study of Quebec and francophone Canada. In 2006 the group broadened its scope and audience, with an international conference on Robert Lepage, The local, the global, and interdisciplinary performance in the works of Robert Lepage/Proximité, ouverture et relations interdisciplinaires dans l’oeuvre de Robert Lepage, 1-3 June 2006. This joint conference was organised by le GRECF, University of Manchester, Centre for Canadian Studies, Birkbeck College, University of London, University of Glasgow.

At the Le GRECF’s 2005 annual conference the keynote visiting speaker was Brian Young (McGill University), who spoke on ‘Writing the history of Canadian material culture: museum and cemetery examples in Montreal’. Other speakers included Bob Morris (University of Edinburgh), who presented on ‘Conflict and stability in Montreal and Belfast, 1760-1920’, Rachel Killick (University of Leeds), who spoke on ‘Sites of memory in Michel Tremblay’s theatre’ and graduate student, Catherine Bourbeau (University of Aberdeen), who presented on ‘The Scottish Associations in Quebec’.

Le GRECF publishes Focus on Québec, an occasional series of essays on Quebec society and culture. The most recent issue was Volume 3, which was launched during the joint conference of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies/Institute for the Study of the Americas at the University of London/London Conference of Canadian Studies, Separatism in Canada: Past, Present and Future, which was held at Canada House, London on November 4-5, 2005.

The group regularly contributes to the BACS annual conference by advising on speakers from Quebec and helping to organise themed sessions during the conference.
